전 세계에 ‘린 제조 방식’을 도입한 도요타가 AI를 통한 효율성 향상과 급증하고 있는 전기 자동차 수요 덕분에 사상 최대 생산량을 기록했다고 보고했습니다. 지난달 도요타의 생산량은 전년 동월 대비 35% 증가한 947,874대로 5월 사상 최대치를 기록했습니다. 2년 전 도요타는 미국 텍사스에 본사를 둔 인비저블 AI와 파트너십을 발표하며 12개 이상 공장의 생산성 증진을 위한 결정이었다고 설명한 바 있습니다. 혼다 역시 미국에서 전기차 생산을 확대하면서 기록적인 생산량을 경신하고 있습니다.

세계 최대 자산 운용사인 블랙록은 AI를 일컬어 산업 전반과 모든 유형의 기업의 생산성을 높일 수 있는 잠재력을 가진 ‘거대한 힘(mega force)’이라고 말합니다. 이를 증명이라도 하듯 AI 분야에 공격적인 투자를 단행하고 있는 블랙록은 보고서를 통해 새로운 AI 도구는 일부 기업이 보유하고 있는 데이터 금광의 가치를 분석하고 발굴할 수 있다고 밝히기도 했습니다. 이 밖에도 탈탄소화와 P2P 대출 등 구조적 변화도 블랙록의 관심사로 전해졌습니다.

누군가에겐 명약관화한 암호화폐의 미래

버지니아 공대의 한 교수가 미국 매사추세츠공과대(MIT)가 발행하는 글로벌 테크 미디어 ‘MIT 테크놀로지 리뷰’를 통해 생산성, 도덕성, 신체적 건강을 가치의 지표로 삼는 현대의 사회적 기준에 대해 비판했습니다. 배타적이며 편협한 기준이 창의성과 포용성을 억압하고 있다는 지적입니다. 이는 모든 사람을 포용하는 관점의 전환이 필요하며, 이미 정해진 규범에 따르는 것보다는 내재된 가치를 중시해야 한다는 의미입니다.

AI 미래로 줌-인

‘최초의 디지털 네이티브 세대’로 불리는 ‘주머(Zoomers·1997~2012년생 Z세대)’가 노동 시장에 속속 진입하고 있습니다. 주머는 직장에서 생성형 AI를 활용할 준비가 가장 잘 된 세대라고 할 수도 있죠. 그런 만큼 AI 열풍이 불고 있는 지금이 매우 시의적절하다고 할 수 있습니다. 다만 주머는 현재 미국 노동 인구의 13%에 불과하며 이들 중 가장 어린 세대는 아직 졸업도 하지 않은 것으로 파악됐습니다.

Big Tech seeks generative AI talent

In a sign of the times, Microsoft launched an AI “skills initiative” to help level-up people’s AI skills throughout the tech industry. The program includes a global grant challenge, free online courses, and a training toolkit for teachers. Microsoft and other Big Tech firms are hungry for up-and-coming AI talent, looking to capitalize on growing bonanza. That spells o-p-p-o-r-t-u-n-i-t-y for Gen Z’s entering the workforce.

AI, demand boost car production

The company that introduced the world “lean manufacturing” reports record production, thanks to a combination of efficiency gains from AI and red-hot demand for electric vehicles. Toyota’s output last month soared 35% from a year earlier to a May record of 947,874 vehicles. Two years ago, Toyota announced a partnership with Texas,-based Invisible AI to boost productivity in more than a dozen U.S. factories. Honda, too, is reporting record production as it expands EV production in the U.S.

AI is a ‘mega force’

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, calls AI a “mega force” with the potential to unlock productivity across industries and for companies of all types. It’s investing aggressively in the arena. “New AI tools could analyze and unlock the value of the data gold mine some companies may be sitting on,” the company concludes in a report. Other structural shifts capturing the company’s attention and investment include decarbonization and private direct lending.

‘Writing was always on the wall’ for crypto

Venture capitalist Peter Thiel still bets big on crypto despite a tumultuous past couple of years for an industry upended by the FTX implosion and economic crosswinds. Valar Ventures recently led a $33M round for a company trying to bring spot trading in cryptocurrencies to Europe. “It’s about how you bridge the gap between traditional finance and crypto,” said One Trading CEO Josh Barraclough, a former JPMorgan executive. “The writing was always on the wall that crypto would become more regulated.” Battery pioneer powered past 100

John Goodenough, who shared the 2019 Nobel prize in Chemistry for pioneering the lithium-ion battery, died at 100, according to the University of Texas, where he was still conducting research. In recent years, Goodenough and his university team were exploring new directions for energy storage, including a “glass” battery with solid-state electrolyte and lithium or sodium metal electrodes.

Documenting the digital divide

Studies by the Pew Research Center conclude that Black and Hispanic adults in the U.S. have far less access to high-speed Internet than white adults. The Undivide Project, a nonprofit launched last year, is conducting research pro bono for communities to help them document evidence of the digital divide. The group finds that neighborhoods with the least infrastructure investment face “cascading risks” that include things like limited Internet access and disproportionate impacts of climate change.

The future is disabled

A new book with the provocative title “The Future Is Disabled” makes the case that it’s crucial to make space for disabled populations and tap into their wisdom. “Opening ourselves up to all-access thinking and disabled expertise will mean a more livable world—one that we all can inhabit,” a Virginia Tech prof wrote in MIT Technology Review. “We ask for people to bend themselves in time and space to fit a vision of worthiness, of goodness, of productivity and moral and physical uprightness, that is absolutely the opposite of inclusive, inventive, and open.” Zooming to an AI future

Gen Z is entering the workforce as the first digital native generation. “Zoomers” are exceptionally prepared to champion and employ generative AI at work, making the timing of the current AI boom quite fortunate. Gen Z makes up just 13% of the U.S. workforce today and the youngest among them haven’t even graduated yet.
